About James

James Kelly-Smith is a Forest of Dean-based photographer whose work traces the quiet moments where light meets leaf, water and stone. Growing up walking the same woodland tracks with his family, James developed an instinctive understanding of how the forest breathes throughout the seasons – from mist-draped valleys at dawn to the last embers of autumn gold at dusk.

His photography is less about dramatic vistas and more about intimacy: the way bracken curls around a footpath, the reflection of beech canopies on a still pond, or a shaft of winter light catching the texture of moss on an old dry-stone wall. Each image is composed slowly, usually after many return visits to the same spot, waiting for the right mood rather than the “perfect” weather.

James works almost exclusively with natural light and minimal editing, preferring to let the forest set the terms of the image. His prints are produced on archival, matte fine art papers that preserve the softness, depth and grain of the original scene.

“I’m not trying to capture how the Forest of Dean looks in a guidebook photo. I’m trying to show how it feels when you go quiet enough to listen to the trees.” — James Kelly-Smith

Alongside his personal projects, James collaborates with local conservation groups and community initiatives to document the changing character of the forest. His images have been used in campaigns highlighting ancient woodland, traditional coppicing practices and the stories of the people who live and work under the canopy.
